COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Funds are available for aging veterans who need assistance with medical and non-medical care both in home and in qualified facilities. Only 27% of veterans are aware those benefits are available.

Millions of veterans and widows of those veterans lose out every day on benefits they didn’t even no existed. Danny Avery, General Manager of Comfort Keepers and 20 year veteran himself tells us it’s important to help veterans save on medical costs.

“Most people think of the VA benefits as pertaining to disability benefits where someone is injured or upon discharge, separation or retirement,” said Danny Avery, General Manager at Comfort Keepers.

For aging veterans the Veterans Non-Service Connected Improved Pension Benefit Program could be of great assistance and enables them to live independently. The benefit helps those who do need help in their homes.

“If they need aid and attendance for one thing or if they are house bound, if they are infirm, unable to take care the necessary activities of daily living such as bathing, grooming, feeding, toileting preparing their meals,” added Avery.

The benefits are income based and are made for those who are in physical need for healthcare.

“To qualify for basically a veteran needs to have served at least 90 days on active duty and only one day a minimum of one day that active duty time must have been during a declared war,” said Avery.

Those include Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and previous wars.
