‘Blithe Spirit’ Set at MUW

Blithe Spirit Rehearsal 2COLUMBUS, Miss. — Mississippi University for Women’s Department of Theatre will present “Blithe Spirit: An Improbable Farce in Three Acts” by Noel Coward Thursday, Feb.27 through Sunday, March 1 in the Cromwell Theatre on campus.

The smash comedy hit of the London and Broadway stages, this much-revived classic from the playwright of “Private Lives,” follows a few days of fussy, cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine, as he balances the unlikely meeting of his two wives.

Directed by William “Peppy” Biddy, department chair, the play is set in the early 1940s of rural England.

Biddy said, “The style of the play is very close to that of the last season’s `Downton Abbey,’ but the plot is much sillier.” As in most of Coward’s work, the characters are full of charm and wit, he added.

The cast includes Abi Wiggins of Senatobia, Macy Robertson of Vernon, Ala., Gavin Mendes of Montecello, Karen Thead of Starkville, Katie Welch of Belden, Naomi Page of Ocean Springs, Casey Duke of Corinth and Lee Crouse of Columbus.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. with the running time being about two hours and 15 minutes. Admission for students is $5 with general admission being $10. For ticket information, call (662) 329-7354.
