And for the 13th year downtown Tupelo was packed with car enthusiasts from for the annual Blue Suede Cruise. Nearly 900 cars were entered this year, which event organizer Allen McDaniel says is a record. Last year’s event, coming in the wake of the Tornado had 750 entries.

There was plenty of food and vintage rock and roll music to entertain the crowd.

McDaniel says with participants coming in from fourteen states and Canada, the three day event is a real boom to the Tupelo hotel and restaurant business.

“They’re here Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, so they spend three days.,” He says. “And they eat while they’re here. They stay in the hotels while they’re here. They buy gas while they’re here. It drops a lot of coin into Tupelo pockets.,” McDaniel says.

He adds that for a vehicle to qualify for the cruise it has to either be a late model high performance sports car or they have to be at least twenty five years old. He says the name Blue Suede Cruise was inspired by Elvis’ song Blue Suede Shoes.
