COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The man of accused of fatally hitting a Columbus woman makes his first court appearance on Monday.

Terance Vontell McBride, 37, of Columbus is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

Columbus police say Eva Jean Richards, 50, was hit by McBride’s 1999 GMC Yukon near the intersection of Seventh Avenue and 17th Street North on Friday night. She died at the scene.

Witnesses told officers McBride got out of his vehicle, looked at Richards and left the scene.

The Columbus man was arrested a few hours later.

Investigators say a lot of people walk along the road where Richards was killed.

“It’s a residential area. It’s not uncommon for people to be walking on the side of the road or sometimes you’ll see someone that’s walking in the road. But there’s no sidewalk at that particular area where she was struck,” said Columbus Police Captain Brent Swan.

McBride’s bond was set at $7,500.
