LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — State Senator Terry Brown says he’s confident he’ll beat the cancer diagnosed last week in his left lung.

The New Hope Republican who as president pro tem is second in charge in the Senate has undergone chemotherapy treatments this week and will continue those for the next four to five months. “We’re going to beat this,” a chipper Brown said Wednesday. “Doctors haven’t talked about surgery or anything, they’ve said we caught it early and should be able to contain it and beat it with 16 to 18 weeks of chemotherapy.”

Brown, who represents Lowndes and Monroe counties in the Senate, says the spots were discovered last week when he started having shortness of breath and feared he was having a heart attack. Tests showed his heart was fine but chest x-rays found the two spots that were causing fluid to build up on his lungs.

He says doctors tell him the cancer apparently started within the last six months and has been caught early.
