FROM THE TUSCALOOSA NEWS

GORDO, Ala. — Law enforcement officers closed U.S. Highway 82 in Gordo during a manhunt for a burglary suspect on Monday afternoon.

The busy highway was closed to traffic because tracking dogs were following the man’s scent back and forth across the roadway, said Gordo Police Chief Todd Hall.

Gordo officers were called to the Browns Circle neighborhood early Monday after a resident saw the suspect in an outbuilding of a residence, he said. The officers responded to an abandoned house, where the man hid in the basement before running into a heavily wooded, swampy area, Hall said.

Officers from all surrounding law enforcement agencies responded assisted in the search. The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office sent its helicopter pilot to search the area from above while Donaldson Correctional Facility sent dogs to track the man’s scent. The suspect had not been captured as of 4 p.m.
