STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Communication is often something we take for granted, a passing hello or good-day is said without much thought. But for those with augmentative communication disabilities, those words are life changing. The T. K. Martin life center held their annual Camp Jabber Jaw in hopes of helping those with limiting skills the ability to improve their interactive communication skills.

Speech Pathologist Lauren Craig says, “This is a really big deal families. They will plan their whole summer just around this week of camp.”

During the camp students are surrounded by other students who have the similar disabilities. This bring a comfortably that they normally do not receive.

Craig goes on to say, “We want our students to be more proficient at using their devices and see that they are not the only child that uses the device. We often find when at school their device gets pushed aside for other forms of communication are used but we want them to be proficient using theirs.”

The children experience a fun, super hero themed learning environment for the week.  They also received a surprise visit from Mississippi State’s own super hero, Dak Prescott.

Although the camp serves as a way to comfort the children, parents are give the opportunity meet families who deal with similar struggles.

“You get to network with other people who have children that use augmentative communication devices and that’s they best thing i get out of it. You develop a network you don’t get otherwise have any availability to,” says Robin Wilkerson.

Camp Jabber Jaw will continue for the remainder of the week with more interactive activities everyday.
