Video: Candidates Talk Upcoming Runoff Election

Columbus, Miss. (WCBI) — Residents in Ward 5 will vote Tuesday in a runoff election to decide who will replace Kabir Karriem as their city councilperson. Voters will decide on Marthalie Porter or Stephen Jones.

“I grew up here so I’m a hometown girl…”, said Porter, “…and I really have the city’s best interest at heart.”

Porter also said “being a female, I think that would bring diversity to the board, too…”

“I think I’ll be a person that can represent the whole ward…”, said Jones, “…people know my agenda by now, that I’ll be a fair person to all the constituents in Ward 5.”

Jones also said the election is important because the representative will, “make appointments to different boards that will represent the entire city of Columbus, because it’s not just about Ward 5, but what we can do to better Columbus.”

Both candidate stressed the importance of going out and voting, and polls will be open from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M.
