Cat Hoarder Given Community Service

BILOXI, Miss. (AP) – A community court judge in Mississippi has sentenced a 78-year-old woman to 100 hours of community service for the hoarding of cats.

The Sun Herald reports (http://bit.ly/UxEBaX ) that Judge Dean Wilson sentenced Dawn Summers on Tuesday and ruled that animal control officers can remove the cats from her property or she’ll face further violation.

Her attorney, David Crane, says he will appeal to county court because Summers is the manager of a feral cat colony sponsored by the Humane Society of South Mississippi.

The city passed a resolution in support of the program in 2009. However, the judge said the city didn’t pass an ordinance to exempt program participants for having more than 6 adult animals on their property.
