Video: Champions Parade Set For Columbus Basketball

A “Celebration of Champions Parade” will be held on the downtown streets of Columbus
next week to honor the Columbus High School basketball team as the Class 6A Mississippi
championship winner. This is the first time Columbus High has won this title in the history
of the school.
Columbus Mayor Robert Smith and Columbus Municipal Schools’ Superintendent Dr. Philip
Hickman announced the celebration Wednesday afternoon. “We will honor this fine group
of young men and those that have worked so hard with them to achieve this great success,”
said Mayor Smith. “This is a chance for us to say ‘thank you’ for what you have done,” he
added.
The parade will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday March 22 and follow the route that the
Columbus Christmas parade uses each year. Groups will stage at the Welcome Center on
Main Street and then proceed east on Main Street to 14th Street. There they will turn to
College Street and then back to Fifth Street.
Players will be individually recognized for their accomplishments along with the
coaching and support staff. The championship trophy will also be presented to the team
before that trophy moves to a permanent home at Columbus High School.
“This is an amazing group of athletes and we are thrilled to tell their story to the community
and recognize their work,” said Dr. Hickman. “They have spent countless hours training and
practicing and learning and now we can show them how proud we are of their work,”
Hickman added.
A full lineup is scheduled for the parade including the Columbus High Marching Band,
ROTC, cheerleaders, police, fire and many officials from the city and the school board.
