JACKSON, MS (WCBI) – Elected school superintendents are closer to being eliminated in Mississippi.

The Senate Education committee Wednesday passed a bill requiring each district to appoint the superintendent.   The bill now moves to the full Senate for a vote.  It has passed the Senate in years past but died in the House. Backers of the bill say the House might have a different stance on the appointed versus elected debate this time.  Currently 55 superintendents are appointed.  The new law would not prohibit school boards from appointing the current elected superintendent to the post.
