Video: Charges Filed in Assault Against Hamilton Coach

AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) — Charges have been filed against a Hamilton mom who is accused of assaulting a basketball coach.

Heather Thompson is charged with simple assault against a school official, that’s a felony charge. Her bond is set at 20-thousand dollars.

The coach she is accused of assaulting Hamilton’s girls basketball coach Sue Verner.

A school bus policy seems to be the cause of an argument that turned into an assault in Amory.

“A school official had informed the father that the student had to ride the bus back, and then the mother approached the coach, and I don’t have nay idea what exchanged happened there, but other than the coach was ultimately assaulted,” says Amory Police Chief Ronnie Bowen.

Hamilton Girls Basketball Coach Sue Verner was reportedly knock unconscious by Heather Thompson, during that assault, these pictures show the extent of her injuries. Her sister says SHE HAS A orbital floor fracture blowout that has her eye pressed downward, and there is nerve damage to the left side of her lower eye causing her check and mouth to be numb.

Amory Police Chief Ronnie Bowen says even though he’s not sure exactly what happened as they are still interviewing witnesses, but he says if the charges are true, that kind of behavior is not acceptable.

“You can not have misconduct taking place at a school or a school event especially by the adults,” says Chief Bowen.

Chief Bowen says no officers were specifically assigned to Thursday night’s game but officers do make walk throughs and school officials are on hand to make sure everyone stays safe.
