Ackerman, Mississippi (WCBI) – A Choctaw County deputy is seriously injured after being hit while responding to a call and then colliding with a car head-on.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol says the crash happened about 8:15 A.M. Thursday on Highway 12, west of Ackerman, at Bowie Maddox Road.

54 year-old Deputy Barry Miller’s patrol car had its lights and siren on when it was clipped by a truck driven by Ralph Bowie, 82.

Troopers say the impact forced Miller’s cruiser into the eastbound lane of Highway 12, where it collided head-on with a car driven by Robert McKay, 62.

Miller and McKay were taken by separate helicopters to a Tupelo hospital. As of Thursday afternoon, they remained in serious condition. Bowie was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
