COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The last 20 years, have been tough on the banking business. Consolidation and closures have seen the number of banks cut in half. But Mississippi based Citizens National Bank has stood strong for 125 years.

They greet customers with a smile and call them by name. That’s the way its been since Citizen’s National Bank was founded way back in 1888.
Citizens National serves only Mississippi customers.

“We’ve been around for 125 years through good economic times and bad economic times, thirty years ago we have different challenge economic times, we had high inflation, now we have low inflation, low interest rates,” said Stan Murray, Market President.

With better times, the bank is seeing low rates on home mortgages. Its an incentive for many to refinance. Market President, Stan Murray says they keep things local. Money that comes through the bank stays in Mississippi.

“It’s important for us as a state that is not one of the richer states to keep our money here and invest it in the local economy so we can keep our local economics growing,” added Murray.

Investing locally is one key to longevity, personalized customer service is another.

“We really pride ourselves on our relationships with our customers. We know them by name, when they come into the bank, we call them by name, we know their financial situation and that really makes a difference,” said Christian Heinkel, Bank Manager.

Murray says the bank has 70 shareholders and is not for sale. Citizens National is looking forward to meeting the financial challenges of the 21st century and beyond.

Citizens National Bank was founded in Meridian and has 27 locations all over Mississippi.
