COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- City leaders approve applying for up to $18 million in federal transportation dollars, to revamp traffic through the busy Highway 45 retail center.

The Tiger Grant application is part of a highly competitive process for a total of $500 million in federal dollars.

The U.S. Department of Transportation expects to award as many as 50 of the grants this year.

The Columbus plan would add sidewalks along Highway 45 to Bluecutt, establish a small shuttle bus system, put utilities underground, improve cross walks and turn lanes.
