Coast Children Sucked Underground By Flood Waters

ESCATAWPA, Miss. (AP) – Two boys playing in water dumped by Isaac’s heavy rains in Mississippi were sucked into an open manhole – then spit back out alive.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said the boys were playing too close to the manhole Thursday when rushing waters dragged them underground. He says they were carried about 200 yards before being ejected.

Byrd said the boys “looked like they had been beat up pretty bad,” but were not seriously injured.

The sheriff did not have the boys’ names or ages and said no police report was filed.

Isaac dumped some of its heaviest rains on Jackson County, where authorities rescued more than 100 people from flooded streets and homes Thursday.
