Columbus, Miss. (WCBI) — Ward Four city councilman Marty Turner took to Facebook to accuse Ward 6 city councilman Bill Gavin of being “racist”.

Turner claimed he could “not remember once that he voted for a black person when a white person applied for the same position.”

The Columbus city council approved a social media policy that applies to city employees, not city councilman.

Mayor Robert Smith explained that while “…we would hope that our councilmen would lead by example and follow suit…”, there are no consequences that could be placed because of a social media post that is deemed inappropriate.

“The councilman are elected officials and it’s up to their constituents during the time of an election, to where if they’re not satisfied with the conduct of the councilman, then that’s the time when they can make needed changes…”, said Smith.

Smith also called the posts “unethical and unprofessional” and said there is a possibility the social media policy could be reviewed, but no action will be taken at this time.
