COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Mayor Robert Smith said Monday’s meeting was about unity, public safety and setting the facts straight on the Ricky Ball shooting case.

The Hunt gym was packed with many people having to stand throughout the meeting.

Mayor Smith read the press release that came out last week, explaining what they know happened that night.

Then the president of the Lowndes County NAACP said she has talked with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations but the NAACP can’t move much further with the case until the investigation is done.

They both say the meeting is about being open with the people of Columbus.

“I want to bring it to the community to give the community an opportunity to vent, and ask questions, make comments and suggestions,” says Mayor Smith.

“We had talked about having this community meeting, we want to keep the community involved in what’s going on. Keep it transparent, not trying to hide any information, especially not on our part. So we want the community to know, kind of what’s going on. We don’t have a lot of information, but what we do have, we want to show it out,” says Lowndes County NAACP President, Lavonne Harris.

Councilman Marty Turner also spoke about unity.

Then, people were allowed to make comments and ask questions.

Mayor Smith says he encourages people who have further questions or comments to go to the city council meeting Tuesday night at 5 p.m.
