Columbus Closer to High-Tech Water Meters

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — By this time next year, Columbus water customers may be able to track their water use every hour of every day.

The Columbus Light and Water board today approved contract negotiations with Texas-based Utility Metering Solutions to replace the city’s more than 12,500 water meters with high-tech digital devices that will transmit readings to a worker driving by.

The system will greatly reduce reading time and improve accuracy. It also will allow customers to better monitor their own use.

Installation could begin by late spring and be completed by the end of the year.
