Video: Columbus Community Meeting Talks Curbing Violence

COLUMBUS, Miss. ( WCBI) — Columbus residents came together with city leaders Monday night to discuss how to keep violence off the streets, in the first community meeting since four people were shot in a northside park.

The Community Center at Sim Scott Park was Packed with concerned citizens.

Mayor Robert Smith and Police Chief Tony Carlton talked about ways to protect the city, including opening a substation at the park.

A special task force will patrol areas like Sim Scott Park.

Superintendent Dr. Philip Hickman also discussed steps schools are taking to keep teens on the right track.

Many people believe the meeting was a good first step in making a big change.

“Each person in this city deserves a safe environment and deserves to sit in their homes and not worry about crime, and that’s one of the things we want to try and fix, ” says Rhonda Daellis.

“A lot of great ideas, a lot of great things came to light that are sometimes swept under the rug. We has some accountability that took place here, and I think it will be great. I just hope it doesn’t die down,” says Tiffany Sturdivant.
