Columbus Leaders Look to Rejig New Ordinance

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Less than a day after passing emergency rules for venues that host events in the city, Columbus leaders already are looking at ways to tweak the new ordinance.

Some of the changes being considered are exemptions for military related venues such as the VFW and American Legion and for locations without a history of disturbance or 911 calls, such as hotels.

The discussions arose after the council approved the new rules Tuesday night to require a $75 permit per event of more than 100 people where alcohol might be consumed, extra security and liability insurance.

The rules are in response to shootings and fights at the Columbus Fairgrounds but the broad language could impact other locations.
