COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Columbus Light and Water wants more water customers, but buying them from another utility won’t come easily.

The Columbus utility’s board has named a three-person committee to work with a consultant on the feasibility of getting customers from either the east Lowndes or Prairie Land water districts, which surround the city.

Both rural water associations have expressed no interest in a deal in the past.

Overall, Columbus’ water rates are cheaper than the two more rural groups and that could provide leverage if those customers push their boards to let them join Columbus. That’s especially true in east Columbus where some east Lowndes customers actually live in the city.
