COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Columbus hopes appealing a state Ethics Commission ruling will clarify open meetings rules for local governments across the state.

In August, the eight-member Commission ruled the city strayed from the law when the mayor held meetings with three council members to discuss an issue that eventually led to City Council action.

Such meetings were the same as a committee and fall under the open records law.

The city appealed after commission attorneys said even a meeting between the mayor and one councilman would violate the standards.

The city argues such meetings are an essential part of local government and decision making. The full commission will hear the city’s appeal Oct. 3.
