COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Columbus mayor Robert Smith won’t get a free pass in his bid for re-election.

Columbus businessman and tow-truck operator Bo Jarrett qualified today to run as an independent for mayor. Smith is running as a Democrat so the two won’t meet until the June 4 general election.

Jarrett says he is running to help small businessmen, give city employees a chance to do their jobs, and represent the “regular” voter and taxpayer.

The qualifying deadline is March 8.
