COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Some Columbus Middle School students will soon be tracking storms from the classroom.

The school received more than $67,000 from State Farm, Thursday, to start a severe weather program.

The money will be used to train students in storm preparation, plus pay for storm safety-related materials for Columbus and surrounding communities.

The middle schoolers will even collect scientific data from weather balloons – sharing that information with the National Weather Service.

“Not a lot of people know Columbus is in Dixie Alley, and the relative number of tornadoes that come through, and the damage they cause,” said science teacher Deborah Pounders. “The students are going to have the opportunity to collect weather data, go into classrooms, and create presentations and video to educate other students.”

Since 2000, there have been 71 tornadoes within 30 miles of Columbus.
