COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Columbus councilmen identify areas where they hope a grant will help pay for improvements or spur housing development.

City Planning and Community Development Director Christina Berry says the areas targeted for the money will be throughout the city, because it’s based on census tracks.

To qualify, the average individual income in the neighborhoods must be 80 percent below the county’s average of about 43 thousand dollars.

If the city is approved for the grant, money will be used to make repairs at some homes to make them more livable or for new construction.

Councilmen agreed to target areas that meet the grant deadlines. It could be this summer before the city is notified if it was approved.
