COLUMBUS, Miss. (Press Release) – Columbus Police have recorded a monthly all-time high number of body-camera video uploads since retraining officers on camera operations.

The use is 27 per cent higher in December 2015 when compared to November 2015 when the training occurred.

“We are making progress,” said Interim Police Chief Fred Shelton. “We know the importance of the camera use. We have been training and working with officers on the camera use. The increase in the camera use shows the response of our officers to the training.”

In December, officers uploaded 662 hours of video on 4,329 files. That compares to 526 hours on 3,399 files in November.

On average, Columbus Police now record approximately 130 video files per 24-hour shift. Videos are now being retained for a minimum of one year with critical cases being retained forever.
