COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Columbus Police Chief Oscar Lewis says he will not sell real estate and will continue his job of leading the department.

Lewis’ picture, in a police uniform, is featured in a full page ad in a weekly real estate magazine.

In a released statement, Lewis says he was working on getting his real estate license before accepting the Columbus job.

Lewis says because he wasn’t actively selling real estate it “slipped” his mind and he should have brought it to the mayor’s attention sooner.

In a separate statement, Mayor Robert Smith says Lewis assured him of his commitment to lead CPD.

City policy requires fire and police department employees to notify their supervisor if they get outside employment.

A city spokesperson says the picture in the ad is from Lewis’ time as chief in Waynesboro.

Lewis tells city leaders he did not have a chance to proof the picture before it was published and it was an unfortunate mistake.
