Columbus, Miss. (WCBI) — Law enforcement needs to react within seconds, sometimes less, when on a scene.

That is why the Columbus police department uses the F.A.T.S. system, or Firearm Training Simulator.

The system allows officers to train with real weapons that are modified with laser technology instead of using live ammunition. The training program is ran on a projection that allows officers to hone in on their shooting skills, as well as put them through shoot or no-shoot scenarios.

Senior Range Officer James Hanson said the software comes with hundreds of different scenarios, all of which are projected at life-like size.

Hanson said the training is beneficial to the new officers and the “30-40 year veteran”.

“You only have milliseconds to make decisions…”, said Hanson, “…the difference is we get to hit the reset button, almost like a video game.”

As the range officer, Hanson is responsible for operating the training program, sharpening the skills of his fellow officers.

“I can change the dynamics of the scenario by what the officer is saying, not saying…”, explained Hanson, “…if the officer doesn’t give the correct command, I can have the perpetrator [in the simulation] become more aggressive, or I can have the comply, and actually never use a firearm in the situation and deescalate it because of the officer’s commands.”

Hanson also said the training is vital for officers, especially those new to the force, to become exposed to the life-like situations. He again referred to the fact that, in real life, there isn’t a “reset button”.

“On the streets and in real life, we don’t have that option…”, said Hanson, “…then hindsight becomes 20/20 and…everyone judges after the fact while you’re there for point four seconds to make a decision that will change the rest of your life and everyone else’s too.”

Columbus police officers are required to complete the training at least once per year.

Hanson also hopes the next administration in charge of the police department will utilize the training simulations more to improve training.
