COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — After weeks of discussion and planning, Columbus’ promised street paving program is about to get started.

The city will open bids October 16th on a list of 62 paving projects covering 16 miles of streets. The city originally had hoped to take bids in September but fine-tuning cost estimates and council members studying what streets to include caused delays.

The contract could be awarded and work begin by the end of October and carry over into next spring. Drainage and sidewalk projects will be awarded later.

This summer, the city issued $5 million in bonds to pay for the work and recently approved a one mill property tax increase to help pay for it. After fees and other expenses, the city hopes to spend about $4.5 million on paving and drainage by the end of next year.
