Video: Columbus Veterans Chapter Renamed in Honor of Vietnam Hero

COLUMBUS, Miss (WCBI)- The Columbus Vietnam Veterans Chapter 997 is changing their name to honor the first soldier from Lowndes County to die in Vietnam.

Harry Moss Kitchens died in 1966 while serving as squad leader.

Kitchens was wounded in the arm and head during sniper fire but still managed to lead his men in a brave fight before falling unconscious and dying.

He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star Medal, his second purple heart and several others for his bravery and sacrifice.

Kitchens’ family also attended the ceremony.

Harry Kitchens’ nephew, Circuit Judge Jim Ktichens, spoke in his honor.
