COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-When you think of Thanksgiving, turkey and family come to mind, but some groups throughout the Columbus area decided to sacrifice a part of their traditions and serve those forgotten.

Turkey, green beans and dressing are some of the main food items needed to create a perfect Thanksgiving meal. And that’s exactly what church groups, fire fighters, and sororities are doing for others.

The 19th annual Columbus feeding gather meals and deliver to the elderly throughout the community.

“Some of these Senior citizens this is the only visit that they will have today. It’s a two fold purpose we actually are giving them a meal and a visit cause everybody needs somebody,” says Annie Barry.

Hundreds of volunteers throughout Columbus are using this event to serve others and even teach their own children the true meaning of Thanksgiving.

“I just think it’s important for them to understand that there are others in our community that are in need and that don’t have the opportunity that they are afforded and that they can see that there are a lot of people less fortunate than they are,” says Scott Hannon.

Scott Hannon says he is happy to see other Columbus residents sacrifice their Thanksgiving morning for others.

“It’s great to see all these folks out here and contributing as a group and giving back to the community,” says Hannon.

“It’s a good feeling to know that this many people care about somebody else. One person reaching another person and that’s what it is all about,” says Barry.

So no matter if you are a child or an adult… serving others less fortunate than you can make you see what you are truly thankful for.

The Front Door Back Door Restaurant in Columbus contributed food to the event when they ran low.
