WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) — More than a year of disputes, agreements and disagreements between West Point and the city’s cable franchise finally are actually settled.

Comcast Cable today paid the city $76,005 to catch up on overdue franchise and pole rental fees. The payment comes just a day before Selectmen had to decide whether to punish Comcast by going as far as removing the company’s equipment from city utility poles.

In January, Selectmen gave the cable giant 45 days to get caught up on the $86,000 it owed the city or risk having the city remove the company’s equipment from utility poles.

The deal was part of enforcing a new contract that increased cable pole rental fees to closer to market rates in other cities.

But that deadline came and went with only a payment of $6,000.

Comcast has been paying just $1.50 per pole rental for 40 years while rates in other cities range from $12 to $25. The new rate is $15 per pole.
