Committee Rejects Education Board Nominee
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The Senate Education Committee has rejected Joel Bomgar’s nomination to join the state Board of Education.
Bomgar, the 33-year-old founder of Bomgar Corp. of Ridgeland, saw his nomination tabled on an 8-7 vote Thursday.
Opponents subjected Bomgar, a Jackson resident, to sharp questioning about his board membership on the conservative-leaning Mississippi Center for Public Policy, his choice to home-school his children and his policy preferences for education.
Bomgar, who was nominated for the nine-year term by House Speaker Philip Gunn, R-Clinton, defended himself, saying that as CEO of the state’s largest software company, he had a vital interest in a well-educated populace.
He says he thinks the Education Committee rejected him because some aren’t open to diverse viewpoints on the board.
