COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Many Mississippians find it hard to believe it’s been almost 10 years since Hurricane Katrina.

The storm didn’t just hit the Gulf Coast hard, but it also had a devastating impact across the state.

U.S. Representative Gregg Harper (R-3rd congressional district) remembers it all too well.

He tells WCBI he appreciates the number of churches from all over the country who came to Mississippi to help – even years afterward.

“When you have something like that that happens, such devastation, it doesn’t matter what your party affiliation is, what your occupation is, we all come together as Mississippians,” Harper said. “It’s something that I hope, it’s a lesson that we never forget.”

Harper tells WCBI he’s also grateful Mississippi had strong leadership at the time with Governor and First Lady Haley and Marsha Barbour.

He says the state emergency management agency did a good job in assisting families, as well.
