Video: Cook Returning Home to Houston as Superintendent

HOUSTON, Miss. (Press Release and staff reports) — The Houston School Board of Education is pleased to announce that Mr. Tony Cook has been hired as the superintendent of HSD effective July 1, 2015. Out of a pool of fifteen applicants Mr. Cook was chosen in a special called board meeting on May 12.

Mr. Cook’s successful experience as a superintendent (Amory School District), tenacity and dedication to build great schools, and his passion for the Houston Community all played tremendous parts in the board’s choice.

In his career he has successfully met challenges in district work and came forth, not only maintaining the level of the school district but, making it stronger. Mr. Cook meets all the criteria that was set by the board and has the experience on many levels of school and district leadership.  He is also a 1982 graduate of Houston High School, has a great passion for our city, is highly motivated to improve our school district, and looks forward to being a part of our community.

His mother and other relatives still live in Houston.

“This is coming home for me. It’s a great opportunity,” Cook told WCBI Tuesday afternoon.

He is a 1987 graduate of Ole Miss with a Bachelor of Science and a 1994 graduate of Delta State University with a Masters of Education in Administration and Supervision.

He has been a football coach with Delta State, Holmes Community College, Hinds Community College and Itawamba Community College.  He was an assistant principal and principal at Pontotoc Junior High and an assistant superintendent there before being named superintendent in Amory in June 2012.
