COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A Columbus city councilman repays money the city council ordered him to pay.

Ward 4 Councilman Marty Turner tells WCBI he gave more than $1,220.11 to the city on Wednesday morning.

The council voted Tuesday night to order him to repay the money, with two separate deadlines.

Turner says he had bank statements to prove the money spent was accurate but a detailed receipt was needed.

The councilman adds, he repaid some of the money because he did not the Tenn-Tom Waterway Conference in Alabama that he was scheduled to go to because Mayor Robert Smith asked him not to go.

Turner claims Smith told him Councilman Charlie Box was going to report Turner to the State Auditor.

Turner says his receipts were not turned in, in a timely manner. He says he would never abuse taxpayer money.

We’re told if Turner had not repaid the money, the council could have turned the investigation over to the state auditor’s office.
