ALGOMA, Miss. (WCBI) — The town of Algoma is known as the Cross Tie Capital of the World.

And this weekend is the 19th annual Cross Tie Festival in the Pontotoc County Community.

The city park is filled with vendors and plenty of visitors many of them that have returned to Algoma for the special celebration. Mayor Harry Corder says there is a history to the park.

“Right where we’re standing is where the houses were for the people that worked at the railroad as we had the cross ties hey day. And they were stacked from here all the way out to the other main street out yonder,” he points out.

Corder says this year’s event also included a class reunion for all the former students of Algoma High School, which has now been consolidated into South Pontotoc.
