COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — With the biggest shopping day of the year looming, last minute Thanksgiving shoppers are also looking to prepare for Black Friday.

Shoppers use their smartphones, computers, and other tech savvy options to find the best savings possible.

Even though the time are changing, however, the local newspaper is still in the mix when it comes to holiday savings.

General manager at the Commercial Dispatch Peter Imes says the Thanksgiving day paper is their “Super Bowl”.

The paper will feature more than 20 inserts, which equals to about 400 pages of local and national advertisements.

Imes said they put the final product on the scale, and the paper weighed in at 2 pounds.

Imes says the 50 carriers assigned to distribute the paper “love and dread the Thanksgiving day paper because it’s such a hassle to bundle it all up and to get it out the door…”

Imes also mentioned that the rise in technology has made competition that much higher, but also said that he believes there is something special to people to be able to view the Black Friday savings by hand.

“We still hear from readers that say that that’s…a family tradition of theirs…”, said Imes, “…they get the paper and plan their Black Fridays around the ads…”

Imes said on a normal day, the Dispatch will distribute around 14,000 papers. On Thanksgiving day, however, that number jumps to 19,000.
