OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss. – (WCBI) Volunteer firefighters can often be considered the backbone of emergency response, especially in rural areas.

They are the first on the scene when a blaze breaks out. They are the firefighters of the East District Volunteer Fire Department in Oktibbeha County. I stopped by their station on Highway 1-82 to learn the ropes of firefighting. First,  it was time to suit up.

The volunteers are working with four new trucks.  For my lesson, we used a pumper and a tanker.

Its also decked out with several features– Once I finally made it up in the cab– this was my response. They even let me rollout the hoses. Keeping a steady water supply is important.

It’s not magic. It’s an orchestrated plan that requires memory, agility and at times– patience.

To find out how to fill up a firetruck, you’ll just have to wait.

Until next week, this is just one more day in the life.
