Deadly Police Shooting Investigated

WINFIELD, Ala. (AP) — The state is investigating after a police officer shot and killed a man in northwest Alabama.

Marion County Sheriff Kevin Williams says the shooting happened Monday in Winfield.

WBMA-TV reports that police went to a motel on a call of a suspicious person in a car.

The man got out of the car, leading police on a foot chase into some nearby woods.

The man allegedly fired during the search, and police returned fire.

The man was killed. Authorities haven’t released his name while the Alabama Bureau of Investigation reviews the case.

The sheriff says the man had been in a stolen car and was carrying a stolen gun.
