Debris Removal Efforts Ongoing in Tupelo

TUPELO, Miss. (Press Release) — Despite recent weather conditions, Tupelo continues to make progress with debris removal from the areas affected by the April 28 tornado. To date, ARX has removed 202,010 cubic yards of debris from the right of way areas of the city. The slowdown, because of the amount of rainfall in the area recently, has had a two–fold affect. Monitors cannot observe work in inclement weather and the road to the landfill is more difficult to pass with large trucks.

The first pass of debris removal should be completed in less than ten days. Residents in the affected area should continue to move as much of the debris from their private property to the curb as possible. On Tuesday, June 10, 2014, ARX reported its operation had reached every street in the affected area, but not yet each individual property.

The Tupelo will continue to seek that assistance of non-profit organizations to help those who still need help removing debris from private properties. So far, about half of the stumps left behind by storm damage have been removed and the other half are being addressed. On Monday, June 9, Senators Cochran and Wicker and Congressmen Thompson, Harper, Nunnelee, and Palazzo submitted a formal request to the Federal Emergency Management Agency to give full consideration of the Personal Property Debris Removal Request submitted by the Mayors of Tupelo, Columbus and Louisville as well as the Supervisors of Lee, Itawamba, Lowndes and Winston Counties in Mississippi.

Soon, Tupelo will enter the second phase of debris removal. We will continue to update residents through our disaster recover page and office city pages on Facebook and through traditional media.

Mayor Jason Shelton said, “I would like to thank the citizens of Tupelo for their continued patience during the recovery effort. ARX, contractors, city employees, volunteers and non-profit organizations have worked tirelessly on this effort and we are grateful for their commitment to helping our city. This full force effort will continue until the entire process is completed. ”

Mayor Shelton, city officials and representatives from ARX and contractors will be available for questions at City Hall at 3:00 p.m. June 10 and at 11:30 a.m. June 11.
