STARKVILLE,  Miss. (WCBI) – Starkville Leaders have voted to remove the Mississippi flag from city buildings. The Board of Aldermen voted 4 to 3 in favor of the move. This comes just one week after the Columbus City Council took similar action.

With tonight’s vote, no city in the Golden Triangle will be flying the State flag over city buildings. Lisa Wynn prepared the resolution to present to the board.

“We joined the number of cities Jackson, Vicksburg, Hattiesburg, Magnolia, Clarksdale, and Grenada who are no longer using our state flag. The message was clear tonight that our city could move on gracefully and we embraced it tonight well.”

The removal of the Mississippi flag is effective Wednesday.

In another 4 to 3 decision on Tuesday, the Board of Aldermen voted to bring all city workers up to at least $10.00 an hour.

The rank and file won’t be the only ones seeing a bump. Effective with the next city elections, The Mayor’s pay will go up to $75,000.00 a year, and Aldermen will be making $20,000.00 a year. The raises for elected officials go into effect July 2017.
