Columbus, Miss. (WCBI) — The Columbus-Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau approved the purchase of the old Elks Lodge building and the Musslewhite’s Barbershop on Main Street in downtown Columbus.

The total cost was $650,000, with the city paying $450,000 and the property’s prior owners giving a $200,000 gift.

One idea for the new purchase is to turn the property into an educational discovery center for all ages. The center would be an interactive experience that highlights the vast history of Columbus.

Chairman of the board Dewitt Hicks said while nothing is official at this point, the theme for the new purchase will be to let “…America, discover Columbus”.

The C.V.B. will respect the leasing rights of the dance studio and barbershop and will continue to weigh options as to what they will do with the property.

No timetable has been set for that decision.
