JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — Some much needed upgrades for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety are closer to becoming a reality.

State lawmakers are debating legislation that would pay for a new building in Rankin County, and a new highway patrol building in Starkville.

The money would come from bonds outside of the state’s general fund.

Similar legislation failed last session.

DPS officials say the Jackson building has structural issues, and the technology is outdated.

The Starkville substation is the oldest one in the state, and will be the last one to see any improvements.

“The Starkville substation is old and dilapidated,” said spokesman Warren Strain. “When we get very heavy rain, often times it takes on water, so there are issues there in terms of computers and other electronics there in the building, so that definitely needs to be upgraded.”

If passed this session, Strain says construction on both buildings should start within a year.

Some lawmakers tell WCBI they believe the legislation will pass this year.
