LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Economic development leaders are reacting to the looming sale of Weyerhauser’s Lowndes County facilities.

The company announced the pending $2.2 billion sale on Monday.

International Paper is expected to take over the facilities late this year.

420 people work at Weyerhauser in southern Lowndes County.

Both companies refused to speculate on the future of jobs at the pulp and fiber mills, but developers remain optimistic.

“We have not been informed of any job losses. We’ve got some questions in right now about people that work for Weyerhauser moving over and transferring to International Paper; how that will work. And we’ve not been able to get the answers to that yet, but I would expect we will get those soon,” said Golden Triangle Development LINK C.E.O. Joe Max Higgins.

Several other mills were sold in the proposed deal.

The Lowndes County plant was completed in 1982.
