ECRU, Miss. ( WCBI) — One small Mississippi town is coming together to honor a fallen hero while leaving a legacy for generations to come.

The park in Ecru was once full of life.

“Some of my fondest memories are playing at the park growing up, and playing ball and meeting friends there on the weekend, ” says Ecru Park Committee member Jason Horton.

Now community members are trying to rebuild it with a wish list of improvements.

“Playground equipment, fencing, dug out and concession stand, ” says Horton.

Hoping to give kids a safe place to have fun and enjoy their home town.

“A place for them to go with their families, that’s something we’d like to bring back, some pride here in Ecru, ” says Horton.

Pride in a park named after an American hero, Blake Mounce.

Mounce grew up playing at the park, he died in 2005 during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

“Blake gave, you know the ultimate sacrifice for this country, I think we should honor that,” says Horton.

To raise money for the park improvements, the city is hosting the second annual Blake Mounce 5k, 10k and Fun Run next weekend.

It is not too late to register, it’s March 28th at 9 a.m. at the park.
