Elephant Wounded In Tupelo Rejoins Circus

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) – A circus elephant is traveling but not yet performing, two months after being injured in a drive-by shooting in Mississippi.

Carol, a 39-year-old Asian elephant, spent several weeks recovering at a Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus farm in Springfield, Mo.

Now, a circus spokeswoman, Melinda Hartline, tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (http://bit.ly/14Mbxpf ) that Carol is reunited with her circus family. Carol is attending the show in Baton Rouge, La., this week but isn’t performing.

Hartline says Carol is “just kind of hanging out, resting and eating and being with her friends and family.”

Carol was shot in the shoulder April 9 after performing at BancorpSouth Arena in Tupelo, Miss.

Tupelo police continue investigating the shooting, but nobody has been arrested. A $34,000 reward is offered.
