Elvis Statues Unveiled at Birthplace Home

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — Saturday was fan appreciation day at the Elvis Birthplace.

And fans gathered on a hill overlooking the home for the unveiling of two statues called “becoming.” The first was of Elvis at 11 sitting on a grate with his guitar and the second was Elvis the entertainer. Henry Dodge is chairman of the Elvis Presley Memorial Foundation.

“Well story has it, ” Dodge recounts ” that Elvis was up here at the end of the day brought his little guitar and sat on a milk grate or a drink box and looked west to the lights of the city played his little guitar and then placed his guitar down and dreamed the dream. Of course nobody knows what that dream was but we do know the reality of what it became,” Dodge says.

Between 75 and 80-thousand visitors come to Tupelo each year to the birthplace and it is said to be the biggest tourist attraction in the state of Mississippi. Dodge says this latest project cost about 1-million dollars and is part of the 7-million dollars in renovations and expansions at the home since 2000.
