COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — The family of a Columbus man shot and killed this weekend is trying to understand what happened and are speaking out about the tragic incident.

“He said, ‘Daddy, I’m going to walk across the street here and if you need me just call and I’ll only be a few steps away. That’s the last time I talk to him,'” says Johnnie Richardson, Joshua Richardson’s father.

The Richardson family is in disbelief after the shooting death of 24-year old Joshua Richardson. Richardson was killed early Saturday morning near Peach and Cherry Streets in Columbus.

Twenty-two year old Tevin Harris was with Richardson and was also shot but he survived.

After hearing about the shooting, the family searched for Richardson and found his body five hours later near the scene of the shooting.

“I don’t really know what’s going on. I believe so far I think we have a flood of guns and things. You put a loaded gun in children’s hands you can expect tragedy,” says Richardson.

Harris is now in a Jackson hospital.

Family members say Richardson and Harris may have had an argument at the Columbus Fairgrounds Friday night before the shooting happened.

“I know this family. It’s a great family. I knew the young man very well. He went to school with my son. He and my son are the same age. But the bigger picture is here is that we have a crime problem here in the city of Columbus and we need to curtail this and try to get a grip on what’s going on in this city,” says Joseph Mickens, Columbus City Councilman – Ward 2.

Police say they are still investigating the shooting and they’ve made no arrests. If you have any information about this case, contact the Columbus Police Department.
